We've all got that drawer that we dread looking in – and the other one that we've really been meaning to sort out for at least six months, but aren't quite sure where to start.

To help you get organised, Good Housekeeping's homes expert James Cunningham has shared with us his expert tips for keeping drawers in tip-top shape.

  1. Every time you take something out of a drawer, have a look at what else is in there. If you've not used an item in six months, do you really need to keep it?
  2. Empty drawers every three months to properly clean them— this is another good way to keep on top of clutter.
  3. Never overstuff drawers. It's so frustrating to have a drawer that doesn't open or close properly, and it will damage the mechanisms.
  4. Order is key, so be logical and sensible with what you keep in each drawer. There's no point having office supplies in the same drawer as beauty products.
  5. Do you have any empty drawers around the house? Have a think if you can effectively re-organise your other drawers to make things even more co-ordinated.

Once y0u've had a good old declutter, it's time to start thinking about the items you do want to keep and the best way to keep these stashed neatly. Hands up if you've ever bought a new screwdriver or measuring tape, even though you know you already have one, just because you couldn't find it for the mess? We know we have. Investing in just a few inexpensive drawer organisers will ensure this is a thing of the past. So, as well as keeping everything more easily visible and accessible, keeping things tidy might also save you money.

We've scouted out our favourite drawer organisers and broken them down into which solution we think would work best for the different spaces in your home. Saying that, most can be adapted for whatever you like – so think practically to find the best option for your needs.

    Kitchen drawers

Narrow drawers will appreciate these Joseph & Joseph organisers – they'll stash as much cutlery as a regular-sized cutlery tray while freeing up room for your other bits and pieces. For larger drawers, these IKEA dividers will segment items. Keep pan lids neat and upright on one side of the divider, for example, and the pans on the other – or use it to keep oven trays and roasting trays separate rather than balanced as one precarious tower. You can stop dreading looking through the junk drawer by purchasing an organiser with adjustable dividers. This will allow you to customise a solution for your exact needs.

    Clothes and accessories drawers

Improperly stored underwear and messy piles of t-shirts can leave drawers looking a mess. Sorting underwear into soft fabric organisers can be a real lifesaver. Your drawers will look far better and being able to see what you have immediately saves lots of time in the morning while ensuring your belongings are cared for the way they deserve. I have this Songmics one and I'm very happy with it.

Clothes that live in your dresser need some dividers to keep them tidy. If you have lots of t-shirts, shallow kitchen options won't work, so separate piles with deeper options instead. Alternatively, sorting skirts, t-shirts and jumpers into baskets is a good idea. You won't crumble a large pile of clothes when removing a single item and your drawer will always look tidy. (This also works well for sheets and duvet sets in airing cupboards!)

Pens and pencils, makeup products and little kitchen gadgets you use every now and then can roll around making a mess. Nobody likes digging through a two-year stash of makeup to find that one burgundy lippie, so sort your collection into groups of products and give them each their own little tray. A plastic organiser can also help – these can be cut to suit the exact shape of your drawer and the space between the dividers set for your exact requirements.
